Ingredients:
For the Cake:
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup hot water
1 cup cherry pie filling (canned or homemade)
For the Cherry Chocolate Frosting:

½ cup unsalted butter, softened
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup cherry pie filling (for mixing in and garnish)
Instructions:
Prepare the Cake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
Carefully stir in the hot water and cherry pie filling until evenly distributed. The batter will be thin.

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cherry chocolate frosting on top.
Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
